Looking for fun things to do in Hillsborough, NC? Guests are invited to join us at The Colonial Inn in Hillsborough to paint on an 11x14 in canvas with a professional artist. Pro techniques will be provided while guests are also encouraged to venture and flow in a way that best fits their own creative style and curiosity. Imagine a date night, gathering with friends, celebrating a special occasion, finding new ways to bond with teenage children, or maybe you need some self care. There isn't a shortage of fun at Paint Nite!
We will be exploring a variety of pro techniques while guests are also invited to experiment with a variety of styles. Take what speaks to you, let go of the rest!
Meanwhile, guests are invited to check out Spencer’s Tavern at the Colonial Inn before the event start time, which will be held in another event room. Spencer's Tavern at the Colonial Inn offers a variety of creature comforts. From handcrafted cocktails and mocktails, to comforting plates made with care, every visit is designed to feel warm, relaxed, and unmistakably Hillsborough. A server will be assisting to come in and out of the room during the event for cocktails and other beverages, though food is not preferred within the painting area. Events run for two hours and will start at the scheduled hour. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early to become acclimated and to place beverage orders before we get started with our group.
Because it takes a committed number of guests to move forward with planning stages, registering in advance is required, and highly encouraged weeks in advance. When an event does not reach a certain amount of bookings 48 hours before the event start time, it will be cancelled. We have multiple specials featuring Early Bird price offers on the Facebook page, which happen ahead. We invite guests to follow us and take advantage of those offers as they arise.
Bring yourselves and a free spirit! The host will supply the rest. We are excited and will see you there!
Cheers!

Questions about what to expect, what’s included, and how it all works.
Past the Crabapple Trees is one of our more detailed paintings, which is exactly what makes it so satisfying to finish. Janice paces it carefully so nobody gets left behind — and Janice will help you turn any mistake into something intentional. Worth knowing: Paint Nite events happen at real bars and restaurants, not studios — it's a night out that happens to involve painting.
A painting class teaches you technique. Paint Nite gives you a finished painting and a good night. Janice is a real local artist — not a teacher running a curriculum — and this event happens at The Colonial Inn, Hillsborough, a real local spot, not a studio. Paint Nite invented this format in 2012 and has sold more than 10 million tickets. The trade-off is honest: lighting varies, it can get loud, and the person at the next easel is a stranger. That's the point. It's more of a night out than a class.
Yes — Past the Crabapple Trees is a Paint Nite favourite for girls nights in Hillsborough. Everyone paints their own canvas, so there's always something to laugh about at the end. If you're planning a bachelorette party or a larger group, private events of 10+ get reserved seating and a custom experience.
Janice is a real local artist based in Hillsborough — not a franchise employee or a corporate hire. Paint Nite artists complete our certification program before their first event. Across all Paint Nite events, 93% of guests say their instructor was amazing. Lisa R. said: 'Good time with friends or even meet new people.'
The Colonial Inn, Hillsborough is a local venue in Hillsborough — a real local spot, not a dedicated painting studio. Paint Nite events happen at places like this by design — venues with character, regulars, and a bar. It can get lively. That's what makes it a night out rather than a class.
Yes — we have 8 upcoming events in Hillsborough this month. You can view them here.
Past the Crabapple Trees is a spring painting — a fresh seasonal pick that captures the energy of the season.
Yaymaker is Paint Nite. We brought both brands together under the Paint Nite name — same artists, same events, same format we invented in 2012. More than 10 million tickets have been sold across both brands combined. If you used to attend Yaymaker events in Hillsborough, you're in the right place. Welcome back.
Your ticket to Past the Crabapple Trees includes the canvas, all the paint you'll need, the use of brushes and an apron during the event, and step-by-step instruction from Janice. Drinks and food are ordered separately from The Colonial Inn, Hillsborough — you pay the venue directly for anything you eat or drink.
The Colonial Inn, Hillsborough's event starts at 7:00 PM. We suggest showing up by 6:30 PM to give yourself time to pick your seats, get a drink and maybe a bite before Janice starts the painting.
You can reschedule your ticket to any other Paint Nite event up to 24 hours before this one starts. After that, tickets are locked — no refunds or changes. If Paint Nite cancels this event for any reason, you'll receive a full automatic refund.
