Love the vibe of this place. Friendly, laid back, and approachable staff. The lobby has a pool table (billiards), bar, and nice seating areas. There is also a swimming pool. Breakfast is not complimentary, but the options available for order are not expensive at all. Bed was comfortable and the shower/bathroom was an elevated experience compared to mainline hotels. First time staying at an Aloft and this left a great impression. Would certainly return and absolutely recommend.
It really is a great location because you can get to the North Shore or to Boston Hospital’s very quickly. The service however, is not particularly great. Here’s an example. They have beautiful kitchenettes in which you can cook a meal, full-size refrigerator and dishwasher. The light above the cooktop was not working in flickering. I asked in the morning if they could just replace the bulb and I said I would be gone for about 7 to 8 hours. Upon my return, the lightbulb was still flickering. The television in the living room area is on the fritz, meaning that the sound is garbled. I asked for that to be fixed but once again nothing. Oh well, it’s not much you can do about poor Service and I really think no one really cares anymore. The one bedroom suites are nicely designed in that one has a separate sleeping quarters from the work area. The walking showers are great, and the bathrooms are spacious and have a ledge in which you can store your potions, lotions, erasers, and all the beauty product you’ve ever need.
I really want to like Aloft hotels. I'm a fan of the stripped down dorm room aesthetic. But there are so many minor things that are really annoying that I can't give more than three stars. No shelf for your own products in the shower. Love putting my razor on the floor. The bed is a mattress on flat wood with no lip to keep it in place. This has the effect of making the entire mattress slide away from the wall if you try to sit up against the headboard to watch the TV...which is opposite the bed...so you would think that sitting in the bed is how you're meant to watch TV? The seating is either a hard plastic chair or an uncomfortable bench with cushions (I can't call it a couch) that's under the TV...so no watching from there either. These are largely problems with the Aloft brand in general. The problem with this one in particular: the location, frankly, sucks. You're nowhere near public transit, restaurants, or (the real killer for me) coffee. If you don't want to pay exorbitant prices for their crappy microwave food, or drink drip coffee, you have to drive. God forbid you be traveling without a car, like I was. You can Uber or walk, but it's not a quick or easy jaunt to find a coffee shop. You can have stuff delivered, of course, but who wants to wait that long for a latte? The good: Staff are nice (shout out to George the bartender who was very personable and very helpful in recommending local places that deliver, and the weekend bartender whose name I didn't catch and was very sweet). Hot water is fast and plentiful. Gym is nice. I didn't use the undersized pool but it seemed fine. Nice outdoor courtyard area by the bar. Price is reasonable, which it better be for the inconvenient location. I don't think I'll stay in an Aloft again.
