What Guests Are Saying
I stopped by Green Gables Bar and Grill in Hudson, Illinois (right on Lake Bloomington at 17485 E 2500 North Rd) and left completely thrilled. This casual lakeside spot delivers exactly what you hope for in a great local bar and grill: outstanding food, ice-cold drinks, friendly service, and that welcoming, no-frills vibe that keeps people coming back. The cheeseburgers here are legitimately outstanding. They use a smash-style technique that creates beautifully crispy, caramelized edges on the juicy ¼-lb patties while keeping the inside tender and packed with flavor. I built my own double cheeseburger with American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and grilled onions. Every bite was perfect — the melted cheese binding everything together, the fresh toppings adding brightness and crunch, and that signature sear on the patty giving incredible texture. They offer plenty of customization options (single through quadruple patties, plus Pepper Jack, Swiss, Cheddar, or Provolone, plus all the classic extras like chipotle mayo or BBQ sauce). These are some of the best cheeseburgers I’ve had anywhere — consistent, generous, and downright crave-worthy. And the cold beer? Exactly as advertised — ice-cold, refreshing, and the perfect companion to those burgers. They even have their own exclusive blonde ale (“40 Horse Limit”) brewed just for them that’s crisp and smooth. Whether you want a classic draft or something a little more unique, the beer selection hits the spot every time. The atmosphere is relaxed and genuine — the kind of place where locals and visitors mix easily. It’s not fancy, but that’s part of the charm. Great for a post-boating meal, a casual night out, or just grabbing a quick, satisfying bite. Service was friendly and attentive, portions are solid, and the value is excellent for the quality. They’ve been a community staple for years (even rebuilt stronger after a fire), and it shows in the care they put into everything. If you’re anywhere near Bloomington/Normal or willing to make the drive from the Chicago area (totally worth it), do yourself a favor and go. Great cheeseburgers + ice-cold beer in a friendly lakeside setting = a winning combination. I’m already planning my next visit. 5 enthusiastic stars — highly recommend! You won’t be disappointed. 🍔🍺
I visited Green Gables and was looking over the menu to figure out what to eat. Everything I've ever ordered from there has always been delicious, never any complaints. I was looking for something that I haven't tried yet. Then Renee, the kitchen manager, saw me searching and suggested the weekly special, the Whiskey Bam Jam burger with a side of Wisconsin White Cheddar Curds. Sounded great, so I ordered. My order came out and I dug in. Awesome burger and cheese curds. I think the Whiskey Bacon Jam Burger should be on the permanent menu. It's that good.
My favorite burger in the area. I crave going here when I miss Wisconsin. Very, very good food.
